Getting to grips with the start of the New Year by composing some new pages in my drawing book. Still mining the vintage aesthetic look which I find irrestible.
Imagined sculpture, closing out 2025. Working up an old drawing into a visualisation of how it may work as a 3D sculpture. Using AI tools to merge and refine textures, ink drawings and colour palettes.
A little early perhaps for anything representing Spring's renewal but here is the Green Man. Scanning in sticks, twigs and leaves from Tooting Common and then compositing the results with AI to create the final image.
Jennifer from Experience Life requested a spread and accompanying spot images for a feature on the microbiome - how the gut influences respiratory health, mood and hormonal balance.
Here is the finished spread and initial line drawing. Although the image was liked it was felt that perhaps a little too much licence had been taken with the rendition of the intestine. This was tightened up at artwork stage and elements carefully placed so nothing was lost in the gutter.

Christina from Northwestern Magazine got in touch with an assignment looking at a group of biomedical engineers who have developed a first-of-its-kind strategy that prevents cancer cells from evolving to resist therapies. Their approach nearly wiped out cancer in lab-grown cells and doubled chemotherapy’s effectiveness in a mouse model of ovarian cancer.
To accompany the article an illustration crossing the spread of the Discovery section was required. I came up with three possible interpretations, as shown here, the first of which was given the go-ahead.

Garuda from Buddhist mythology - with the body of a man and the wings of a bird, the living breath of freedom.
Not sure I need to add any commentary - we’re confronted with this night after night on our tv sets and, unbelievably, still no international consensus to put an end to it….

Compositing various photographic elements for anticipated series of surreal beach images. Focusing very much on a vintage/retro aesthetic.
I was looking through some very early editions of Vogue magazine (from 1892!) and was struck by their aesthetic and how in some ways they seemed almost contemporary - the combination of cream pages and grey imagery. I envisioned how a more abstract, modern, image would work on those pages and picked out an ad for Haircloth to update.
'The Stylish Skirt worn by this Charming Girl is lined with haircloth.'
Out of interest I also used AI to animate the image and to rotate the figure through 360 degrees to see how it might look from different angles. Some stills and the mocked up ad are shown below.
